The design of the VTC is based upon the use of a proprietary "capstanless" tape transport. the tape is moved from one rell to the other by servo controlled,direct current motors.the motors and their associated servo system maintain a tape loop in the vacuum storage chamber to provide constant tape tension. As long as the tape loop is positioned at the proper depth in the chamber,tape tension is constant despite reel radius variations and fluctuation in tapes speeds.
Flanged rotary guides with ball-bearing mountings guide the tape smoothly with a minimum of friction and misalignment. interlock light sensors in the vacuum chamber stop the operation in the event of malfunction or faulty tape threading.
